“It was all in vain. I worked so hard on trying to get the promotion, but I was rejected.” “I spent so much of my money on this, but it turned out to be a waste.” In life, we all have experiences where we have invested so much of our time, energy, and maybe even money, only to have it all feel pointless (Ecclesiastes 1:2-3). The apostle Paul has a suggestion, “Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labour in the Lord is not in vain” (1 Corinthians 15:58). The word “vain” means empty, which is exactly how we feel when we have put in so much and get nothing in return. Empty. Yet, if we invest our time, energy, and maybe even our money in God’s work, we are promised it won’t be empty. In fact, it will be the exact opposite. Full. Abundantly full. “I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full” (John 10:10). Indeed, with Jesus as the centre of our lives, with God’s purpose as our passion, we will, along with David, be able to say, “my cup overflows” (Psalms 23:5). If things feel empty, give your life to God, let him employ your time, and know for certain your labour will not be empty, but overflowing to enteral life.
