1Jo 2:17 – Fading away

It’s grey and dark when we board the plane. Thick storm clouds obscure the midday sun. As the plane takes off and we climb through the clouds, the cars and buildings quickly fade away and vanish. Then, as we burst through the clouds, a blue sky and a dazzling bright sun welcome us. It’s like a new world. And indeed, it is a new world. It’s a lesson about our world and God’s promise. “And this world is fading away, along with everything that people crave. But anyone who does what pleases God will live forever.” (1 John 2:17). Our world may seem so real with all the things we own and possess. However, we are warned that it is fading away. These things that we cling to are temporary. It’s the unseen, God, who is eternal (2 Corinthians 4:18). And so rather than fixate on pleasing ourselves in a fading world, let’s focus on pleasing God, for those who do this will live forever. As the clouds of fear and worry blanket our world, know with certainty that our world will fade away, but above the clouds shines the Son – and life eternal – and his promise of a new world when he returns.
