Luk 12:27 – The dinner table

“Come and sit, the meal is ready.” We are seated around a table. While this scene is sadly unusual in our eat-in-front-of-the-TV world, this was even more unusual. We are camping in Botswana, meters away from hippos and crocodiles. Our campfire light dances across our table while a hyena whoop wafts in the night air. Sitting around a table to have dinner, wherever we are, is so special. The table is a place to connect and feel belonging. It’s a place of preparation – enough chairs, cutlery, and crockery for those coming. However, we don’t all get to eat at tables. We may have no family or few friends. We may seldom have opportunities to be invited to a meal around a table. However, Jesus has prepared, at the greatest cost – his life, a table to which we are all invited. Each week he invites us to remember him with a meal at the Lord”s table (Luke 24:30). But it doesn’t end there. He promises to share a meal with us at his table in the Kingdom. All we need to do is accept his invitation and be part of the family. “It will be good for those servants whose master finds them watching when he comes. Truly I tell you, he will dress himself to serve, will have them recline at the table and will come and wait on them.” (Luke 12:37). Come and sit, his meal is ready.
