We all want peace in our lives. However, we confuse tranquillity with peace. Lying on a tranquil beach is not the same as peace. Our worries and fears can still trouble us. In fact, Jesus was able to sleep in a small boat that was sinking in a storm (Luke 8:23) – that’s divine peace. Peace is not dependent on circumstances. Yet, while we may want this peace how determined are we to get it? “Turn from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it.” (Psalms 34:14). Peace is something we must seek and then when we find it, pursue it. Jesus is our peace (Ephesians 2:14), so we need to come to him to find this peace. However, we then need to pursue peace. The word means “chase” or “follow”. It’s active. Peace is pursued in the storms of life – when those around us are difficult. “Pursue peace with all people” (Hebrews 12:14). Peace is pursued when life’s temptations are raging. “Flee also youthful lusts; but pursue righteousness, faith, love, peace” (2 Timothy 2:22). Peace is pursued by actively seeking things that make for peace. “Therefore let us pursue the things which make for peace.” (Romans 14:19). With the gift of Jesus’ peace and our constant pursuit of it, we will, like him, find peace, even in our storms.
