There is a strange verse at the start of the book of Judges. “The LORD was with the people of Judah. They took possession of the hill country, but they were unable to drive the people from the plains, because they had iron chariots” (Judges 1:19). It sounds like Almighty God couldn’t take out a few iron chariots. That’s crazy! But it’s true. God works in accordance with our faith. We read later in the New Testament how “Jesus did not do many miracles there because of their lack of faith” (Matthew 13:58). How often in our lives do we limit God by applying our small perspective to his infinite greatness? Nine times in this first chapter of Judges, it says the people “failed to drive out…” the enemy living with them. And so, by the second chapter, we read that “they abandoned the LORD” (Judges 2:12). God doesn’t want just parts of your life. “You can have my Sundays but not the rest” or “You can have my home life but not the rest”. God wants every part, every minute of your life. He wants to conquer you completely – even your iron chariots – the parts you think are impossible to overcome. He wants you to love him “with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind” (Matthew 22:37). It’s then that you will truly experience freedom and peace.
