Jer 2:13 – Broken cistern

Jer 2:13 – Broken cistern

Fast cars, a full-on social life, beautiful homes, successful careers, social media, sports, entertainment. “For my people have committed two evils: They have forsaken Me, the fountain of living waters, And hewn themselves cisterns —broken cisterns that can hold no water.” (Jeremiah 2:13). What are the cisterns we are digging in our lives in the hope of drawing out delicious water?  We make these cisterns so we can experience happiness and success. But in Jeremiah, we are told that our cisterns are broken. They can hold no water. They cannot bring us life or peace or joy. There may be fleeting moments, but then it all seeps away, and we are left with dry, empty, broken lives. Instead, God asks us to seek Him. For He is the fountain of living water. No digging required! His living water is freely available. His water will fill our life with purpose, hope, love, and transcending peace. And like a bubbling fountain, his water will never run dry but always be full of His everlasting, refreshing, sustaining presence – welling up to eternal life (John 4:14). Which water do you want?
