I was paying for parking at the pay station next to which stood a parking attendant. Seeing her holding a wad of cash, which she had cleared from the machine, I held out my hand, saying I would accept R50 for parking here. Seeing her confusion, I jokingly quipped, “You don’t pay us to park here?” As I joked with her, I couldn’t help but smile thinking of my dad, as this was precisely what he would have done, always wanting to make people happy. For a moment, I felt I was becoming like him – which would be an honour as he was such a kind and caring person. But my dad had a Father he also imitated, and one we all should imitate – our Heavenly Father. Jesus told us to do this – “Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect” (Matthew 5:48). It’s one thing to imitate a kind and caring father, but imitating perfection is impossible. True, but God gave us a gift. “For our sake, he made Jesus to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.” (2 Corinthians 5:21). Imitation is impossible for us, but because of what Jesus did, living a perfect life, God sees Jesus’ perfection when he looks at us. That’s incredible. Despite our failings and weakness, God, in His love sees a perfect child. So, smile knowing despite your failings and faults, your Dad sees Himself in you.
