Luk 24v32 – The first supper

The Last Supper is a phrase all Christians are familiar with. It was the final meal that Jesus had with his disciples before he gave his life. A meal that was instituted so we would remember his sacrifice and what it means to us. But have you heard of the First Supper? This takes place after his resurrection. Jesus meets and walks along with two disciples, who understandably don’t recognise him as they assume he is dead and all hope is lost. In this their darkest hour, he teaches them the good news about himself. And then, at the end of their journey, he sits down for a meal with them, just like the last supper, but now the first supper of his new life. “When he was at the table with them, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it to them” (Luke 24:30). And in this moment, the disciples’ “eyes were opened and they recognised him, and he disappeared from their sight” (Luke 24:31). And then they proclaim, “Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?” (Luke 24:32). Jesus desires to walk with you, to enter into your life and share a meal, so like these disciples, you may have your eyes opened and your heart filled with love and joy beyond words.
