Nature versus nurture. A common debate. Scientifically, we can view this debate as genetics vs epigenetics. Genetics is the DNA we are born with, the unalterable part of us, and epigenetics is the expression of the underlying gene code. The field of epigenetics shows how external factors, such as stress, can affect gene expression patterns and be passed down to the next generation. This reminded me of the verse in Exodus 34:7, which speaks about the sins of the parents, resulting in punishment down to the fourth generation. However, I believe there is greater value in viewing epigenetics through the lens of hope. For if the converse holds true, it means conscious patterns of good behaviour can influence future generations, and we have been given the perfect model through Christ. Not only that, we have been adopted into God’s family “Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God” (John 1:12), and thereby receive a living hope as part of the new creation, inheriting the Spirit and behaviour patterns of our Father. “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!” (2 Corinthians 5:17).
