Ever heard of the term ‘muscle memory’? It involves repeating specific movements to encode the movement patterns into your muscle’s memory bank, so to speak. The movements eventually become second nature, and you can easily perform the tasks without much thought. Take riding a bike, for example. Professional athletes spend thousands of hours repeating movements until they become intuitive and can execute them with the highest levels of precision. This highlights the importance of repetition and how repeatedly performing patterns can re-wire specific circuits in our brains. God reveals himself to us through patterns, so we should constantly remind ourselves of these patterns until they become second nature, part of our ‘spiritual memory’. By doing so, we imprint His Word onto our hearts and minds, enabling us to distinguish the exception from the norm, knowing right from wrong. “Fix these words of mine in your hearts and minds; tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Teach them to your children, talking about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.” (Deuteronomy 11:18-19).
