While cycling along a gravel road in a remote area, we came across an ostrich. It soon became apparent this huge bird was missing two things – a brain to match its size and wings that actually work. As we cycled behind it, the ostrich ran ahead on the road, not once thinking it could turn off the road and the pursuit would be over. Flapping its wings, also maybe as a surprise to it, did not result in it soaring into the air. Finally, it decided it could turn off the road as it made its way out of our path. In Job 39:13, we read that “The wings of the ostrich flap joyfully, though they cannot compare with the wings and feathers of the stork.” Such massive wings – but all show and no go. This ostrich reminds me of “The fool (who) says in his heart, “There is no God.” (Psalms 14:1). We are all running from fears that pursue us along a road that leads inevitably to death. But those who say there is no God merely continue their panicked run, flapping their wings boasting of promises of escape. Technologies, cures, science, enlightenment, freedom, choice…yet it’s all a flapping of wings that don’t fly. The end remains the same – death. It’s only when we accept our inability to fly, to escape our destiny, that God will open our eyes to his path of salvation (Romans 6:23).
