There’s a crazy story in the Bible where Jesus encounters a madman called Legion. “This man lived in the burial caves and could no longer be restrained, even with a chain…Day and night he wandered among the burial caves and in the hills, howling and cutting himself with sharp stones” (Mark 5:3-5). But despite his terrible condition, Jesus heals him. The madness and despair are driven from him. The people “saw the man who had been possessed by the legion of demons, sitting there, dressed and in his right mind” (Mark 5:15). An incredible transformation. But this is not why this is a crazy story. It’s what happens next. After witnessing this astonishing transformation, it says that the people praised God and gave thanks for a broken man saved. No! It doesn’t say this. It says, “the people began to plead with Jesus to leave their region” (Mark 5:17). Now, that’s the truly crazy part. The people don’t want Jesus, who can change the life of a person so lost and hopeless. It’s crazy. But it’s actually the story of our world. Jesus brings this incredible healing to people in total despair, but the world’s response is to have nothing to do with him. No matter how bad a person’s situation, Jesus can save them.
