I’m sure by this point in your life, you’ve heard the story of the tortoise and the hare. The story’s message is that it is not about how fast you start but how strong you finish. The Gospels are full of stories with important messages, which in the Bible are called parables. Parables, like the “Good Samaritan” in Luke 10: 30-35, allow Jesus to teach important truths in a different way. When asked why he spoke in parables, Jesus replied, “Because the knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of heaven has been given to you, but not to them.” (Matthew 13:11). However, Jesus’ parables don’t only teach important truths, they are also an insight into the human heart. Those who are humble will understand. Those who are stubborn will not. Jesus could have preached his message in other ways, but the Pharisees and those against him would still have rejected him. The good news is that if we open our hearts to God and humbly believe in what he sent his son to earth to do, we will not be like those who are “hearing but never understanding” (Matthew 13:14) but a part of God’s kingdom. So today, take joy in knowing that your acceptance of Jesus as your saviour means that God has chosen to share the secrets of His kingdom with you.
