Mat 7v28-29 – God’s flower letter

You awake to an absolutely beautiful day. An outdoor adventure is simply irresistible. So, what shall it be? A visit to the Botanical Gardens to soak in the beauty of the plants, or a walk in a nearby nature reserve to marvel at the flowers and trees, or a stroll around the neighbourhood to admire the gardens alive with bees and butterflies. All of these will fill most with awe of God. But why stop there? Take this opportunity to see more – to see God’s message written in colourful floral fonts. A vivid grouping of dazzling white and flaming red blooms speaks of “a pillar of cloud to guide them on their way and by night a pillar of fire to give them light” (Exodus 13:21). A spray of white roses or orchids clinging to a long green stem speaks of Jacob’s dream of a stairway “reaching to heaven, and the angels of God ascending and descending on it” (Genesis 28:12). Or the Strelitzia’s orange and blue petals with white and purple tongue-like projections speaking of the Holy Spirit like “tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of the disciples” (Acts 2:3). Or the vibrant blue of the Agapanthus telling a story of love in its name (Greek agape means love) and beauty. So “why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labour or spin. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendour was dressed like one of these” (Matthew 6:28-29). When you next admire a flower, see much more in its beauty – see God’s floral message written to you.
