Imagine you receive an amazing job offer. The salary and perks are so good. It’s like a feast of good things. You crave to have it! What do you do? Accept it, of course. Yet we may forget that no one gives without expecting much more in return. This “feast” may cost more than we expect. “When you sit to dine with a ruler, note well what is before you, and put a knife to your throat if you are given to gluttony. Do not crave his delicacies, for that food is deceptive.” (Proverbs 23:1-3). The offer is the best food – the delicacies you crave – a new car, more money, a beautiful office, fancy title…but indulging is dangerous. Rather “put a knife to your throat” – stop eating! Sitting down at this table won’t bring the rewards we think. The next verses say it clearly – “Do not wear yourself out to get rich” because your money will “sprout wings and fly off” (Proverbs 23:4-5). Sitting down to eat the food of the rich will always leave us disappointed. Rather, sit down at God’s table (Psalm 23:5).
